When Pastor Phil Gresham was called to preach at a small church in rural Mississippi, he never imagined the nightmare that awaited him. On his first night there, Gresham’s car was vandalized and his family was bombarded with threatening messages.
“The Lord has spoken to me about this place,” Gresham told CBN News. “I know that whoever is attacking us is after my heart.”
Since then, Gresham and his wife have received countless death threats and their children have been the target of hateful messages on social media. In addition, their ministering work has been disrupted.
Gresham is not alone in this struggle. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), churches are now being targeted more frequently than ever before. A recent study by the SPLC found that since 2013, there has been an increase of almost 900 percent in antiblack violence perpetrated against churches and Christian symbols.
Many pastors are responding to this increased danger by gathering their congregations together to pray for protection.
“We’re not going to be intimidated,” Gresham said.
Pastor Shares How Prayer Has Helped Him Through Tough Times
Pastor Rob Smith of Bethlehem Bible Fellowship Church in Phoenix, Arizona, says prayer has been an important part of his ministry and personal life. In an article for The Gospel Coalition, Smith shared how prayer has helped him through tough times.
Smith said that when he was first called to ministry, he was “terrified” and didn’t know how to pray. However, through prayer, he learned how to connect with God and find strength.
“I learned that I could talk to Him about anything,” he said. “It wasn’t always easy, but it was a real privilege to be able to do that.”
Through prayer, Smith has been able to keep his ministry going when things have been tough. For example, after the death of his wife in 2012, he found comfort in prayer and started preaching again a few months later.
“I think prayer is the key to everything,” Smith said. “If we can learn how to pray consistently and fervently, we’ll be okay.”

Pastor Invokes God’s Mercy on His Congregation
Pastor Ricky Martinez’s congregation prayed for him and his family on Sunday. Martinez, who is the pastor at Riverside Church in Murrieta, California, was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer on Feb. 14 and began chemo treatments two days later.
Martinez’s congregation gathered around him in prayer on Sunday morning. They asked God to heal him and his family, and to guide them during his illness. “We asked God to touch Pastor Martinez’s heart before he passed away and to fill him with His mercy, healing and peace,” said one woman during the service.
The church also held a Feed The Children event to raise money for Martinez’s treatment. “This is such a great community of believers that are coming together to help one another out,” said Feed The Children president Paula Czaja. “It’s amazing how quickly things have turned around for Pastor Martinez since he was diagnosed with cancer. We are hopeful that these prayers will lead to a full recovery for him and his loved ones.

Church Grows in Prayer after Terrorist Attack
Churchgoers in the United States and around the world are coming together to pray for Pastor Tim LaHaye and his family after a terrorist attack in their church. The pastor’s son, Tyler, was shot during the shooting and is currently in critical condition.
Pastor LaHaye’s church, Faith Chapel in San Antonio, Texas, was targeted by a lone gunman who opened fire on Sunday morning. Tyler was shot while he was sitting in his father’s office. Witnesses say that when the pastor arrived at the scene, he started praying for his son.
The global outpouring of support for Pastor LaHaye and his family is inspiring. Hundreds of people have left comments on articles about the attack, offering prayers and words of encouragement. Some have even organized flash mobs and vigils in support of the church.
“This is just one more example of how our community comes together in tough times,” said Cyndi Schmidt, a member of Faith Chapel who helped organize the vigil. “We’re going to keep fighting until terrorism can’t take our churches away.”
