The History of Prayer for NYC
Since the earliest days of New York City, residents have prayed for guidance, for strength and for protection.
In 1624, when the first Dutch settlers arrived in Manhattan, they built a small chapel on Governors Island. The early Dutch settlers were religious and prayer was an important part of their lives. They believed that God could help them get through tough times, so they frequently prayed for guidance and protection.
In 1785, the city of New York was founded. In preparation for the new city, the residents decided to build a chapel on Wall Street. Unfortunately, construction of the chapel was delayed and it wasn’t completed until 1825. The chapel was named Trinity Church after the three main churches in London: St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and Trinity Church.
Trinity Church became an important site for prayer in New York City. The church was filled with prayers for guidance, strength and protection from harm. In fact, people would often pray multiple times a day!
The popularity of Trinity Church led to the development of other prayer groups in New York City. Groups like the American Bible Society, which is now one of the largest Bible publishers in the world, started praying for guidance and protection

How to Pray for NYC
If you’re currently in or have recently been in New York City, whether you’re a resident, visitor, or just thinking about the city, there’s a good chance you’ve experienced the powerful effect prayer has on cities.
So how can you pray for New York City? There are countless ways to do it- from reading and reflecting on Scripture, to making simple petitions, to praying with others. The important part is that prayer is personal, relevant, and specific.
Here are a few tips to get started:
1. Start by reading Scripture. God’s Word is full of prayers for cities (see e.g. Psalm 137; Isaiah 42) and can offer guidance as you think about specific requests for New York City.
2. Make a list of the areas you want God to bless in New York City- economic stability, safety, healthcare, education, etc.- and pray specifically for each one.

We come to You today in prayer for the City of New York. We know that You are intimately involved in every aspect of this great city, and we ask that You would bless it with peace, safety, and prosperity.
Please keep the residents safe from all harm, and grant them a sense of calm in times of turmoil. Help them to see the evil in all things, but also show them Your love and mercy. Help them to find strength and hope in their faith.
We ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
As we continue to mourn the tragic events that took place in New York City this past week, it is important for us all to take time to pray. We need God’s help as we process these awful events and come together as a city to support one another. Please join me in thanking Him for His protection over our city, and please continue to offer your prayers for those who have lost their lives – may they be remembered with love and peace.
