History Of May Memorial Baptist Church

May Memorial Baptist Church was founded on October 1, 1865 by Rev. J.C. May and nine other members of the African Methodist Episcopal church. The original building was a small frame structure located at the corner of Fifth and Monroe Streets in Petersburg, Virginia. In 1883, the church moved to its present location on Fourth Street in downtown Petersburg.

In 1944, the church underwent a major renovation and expansion project that added a new sanctuary and educational wing. The current building measures over 100,000 square feet and features a state-of-the-art sound system and video projection capabilities.

May Memorial Baptist Church is an active member of the United Methodist denomination and has been involved in numerous community outreach initiatives including disaster relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, distribution of food during the national food insecurity crisis of 2008, assistance with rebuilding efforts following the 2011 Virginia earthquake, and support for local youth organizations.
