Pastoral Prayer for Advent

Pastoral Prayer for Advent

The Advent season is a time of waiting, but it’s also a time to reflect. This prayer reminds the listener that Jesus is the ultimate reason for Christmas.

Loving God,

You are the source of all life. You are the ultimate source of hope. You are the ultimate source of peace and joy. We give thanks to you for your love which is at the heart of all creation. We praise you that in Bethlehem we see a glimpse of what this world will be like when Christ rules as its king: a time when there will be no more tears or death or suffering, with perfect justice and peace for all who believe in him (Revelation 21:1-4).

In your mercy receive us into your reign now while we wait for this time when all things will be made new (Revelation 21:5).

We praise you for your great love and faithfulness.

God’s love is unconditional, based on nothing that we do or others do—only on God himself. God loves each of us without condition and without strings attached, whether or not we believe it. His love is not contingent upon how well we follow the rules he has set out for us to follow; instead, his love embraces those who openly defy those rules because they trust in him rather than themselves. This sort of faithfulness is not something we can achieve through our own efforts; it comes from knowing that God does not change his mind about us just because things get difficult.

May our hearts’ desire be to live as you intended—in love and grace, in holiness and truth. Remind us that Jesus is the hope of all people.

Help us, O God, to remember that the Advent season is a time of hope. Help us to see in the darkness of this world the light of Christ that shines within each one of us—the light of love and grace, holiness and truth. Remind us that we are not alone in our struggles but that you walk with us every step along life’s journey. May our hearts’ desire be to live as you intended—in love and grace, in holiness and truth. Remind us that Jesus is the hope of all people.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen

Help us to live out this hope in our lives as we consider the Divine Child born in a stable so many years ago.

Jesus is the hope of all people. He came to bring a message of peace and love, to show us the way to God, and to give us a new life. Jesus came because God loves you.

So take time today for quiet prayer as we consider this hope that was born so many years ago in a stable. As you pray, ask God for help in living out this hope in your own life as well!

“Lord, grant that this Christmas will be more than a remembrance; let it be a rebirth of our faith and trust in you. Grant us courage to proclaim the truth of Jesus’ birth and life as we share his good news with others.”

Help us to reflect the light of Christ in all we do during this Christmas season.

  • Remind us that Jesus came to earth as a man, but remained God. He came to show us what it looks like to live in God’s love, and he calls us to follow his example by loving one another with that same unconditional love. As you prepare your heart for Christmas, help us rediscover your unconditional love for each other so that we can share that love with others.
