Saints John Paul II and Francis Prayer
Pope Francis and Saint John Paul II are revered for their prayerful ministries in the world. Prayer is one of the many ways they have shown themselves to be servants of God.
Pope Francis has said that “prayer is not only a way to communicate with God, but also a way of acting in the world” (Laudato Si’, 153). He has called for an “integral” spirituality which includes not only prayer but also service to others and action on behalf of justice (IL manifesto di Papa Francesco: “Prayer is at the heart of integral humanism”). Saint John Paul II was known for his deep personal prayer life, spending hour after hour in silent contemplation. His writings reflect his longing “to know God as Father Himself, through union with Him in love” (Redemptor Hominis, 22).
Both Pope Francis and Saint John Paul II have affirmed that prayer can be effective in helping to resolve global conflicts. In a letter he wrote shortly before his death, Saint John Paul II urged all people of good will to join him in praying for peace. He said: “I believe it would be fruitful for everyone – even politicians – to open themselves up more frequently both mentally and emotionally to divine assistance, so that alongside human wisdom we may invoke divine Wisdom from on high… We need above all peace; no nation can prosper without it; no culture can find its full bloomings”
